Daniel Dale is a senior reporter in CNN’s Washington Bureau, where he fact-checks political claims from all camps and political affiliations.
During our discussion with moderator Evan Dawson, Daniel will discuss the common techniques used by prolific “liars” that he’s encountered and how both he – and the public – can work to bring the actual facts to light.

Daniel Dale has spent nearly a decade reporting on populist politicians with an aversion to the truth. Beginning with Mayor Rob Ford’s infamous reign in Toronto City Hall to CNN where he’s responsible for fact-checking every word former President Donald Trump says, as well as President Joe Biden and other political figures in the US. He’s earned an international following for his relentless efforts. Mr. Dale believes journalists play a crucial role in breaking patterns of dishonesty and draws on his pioneering efforts to fact-check politicians to explain why facts still matter in this age of disinformation.
As a Toronto Star reporter and bureau chief at Toronto City Hall between 2010 and 2014, Mr. Dale was responsible for breaking major stories about former Mayor Rob Ford, and, in the process, accidentally acquiring personal experience in confronting the lies of a prominent officeholder.
From 2015-2019, Mr. Dale worked as the Star‘s Washington bureau chief where he became known for his pioneering use of Twitter to fact-check Trump in real time. Politico called him one of the “Breakout Media Stars” of the 2016 election. He was also named to Rolling Stone‘s “Hot List” in 2018 and called one of Toronto’s 50 most influential people in 2017 and 2018 by Toronto Life.
As a Canadian who has reported from around the U.S., Mr. Dale has a unique perspective on American politics. He has covered NAFTA negotiations, the 2016 and 2018 campaigns, and breaking news and social issues, including mass shootings in Charleston and Dallas, racial segregation in Milwaukee, and the opioid epidemic in Massachusetts.
In recognition of his career in journalism, Dale won the Norman Webster Award for International Reporting at Canada’s 2019 National Newspaper Awards, the National Newspaper Award for Short Features in 2012, and the Edward Goff Penny Memorial Prize for Canada’s best young journalist in both 2010 and 2011.
Dale is a graduate of York University’s Schulich School of Business with a Bachelor of Business Administration.
