Libtard & Deplorable: terms of derision now worn as virtual badges of honor. How did we come to these proud divisions? Can we overcome them?

Proof that, indeed, opposites do attract, Bob Shrum and Mike Murphy bring to the Forum real strategies for surpassing our political labels, finding common ground despite disagreement, and charting a forward course for our nation. The best of longtime friends, Shrum and Murphy boisterously agree on one thing: despite appearances, it remains possible for political struggle to be productive, rational, courteous, essentially friendly, and, most important, effective in the search for solutions to our nation’s many challenges.

In the Left Corner: Robert M. Shrum is the Director of the Center for the Political Future and the Carmen H. and Louis Warschaw Chair in Practical Politics at University of Southern California Dornsife. He is a former political strategist and consultant who was described as "the most sought-after consultant in the Democratic Party," by The Atlantic Monthly until his retirement as an active consultant in 2009. His political memoir, No Excuses: Concessions of a Serial Campaigner, was published in June 2007 by Simon and Schuster.

In the Right Corner: Michael Murphy is the Co-Director of the Center for the Political Future. Murphy is one of the Republican Party’s most successful political consultants. He has led more than 20 statewide campaigns to victory, including gubernatorial races for Jeb Bush, Mitt Romney, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Christine Todd Whitman, John Engler, and Tommy Thompson, as well as dozens of Senatorial, United States House and other races.

But this program is no Point-Counterpoint. It’s point is to help us discover, illuminate, respect, and agree upon common ground – for the betterment of all.

Which is – to make the point blunt - the point of “politics”!

Moderator Evan Dawson, host of WXXI radio’s Connections interview program, promises not to stand between the Elephant and the Donkey.
