Protecting Your Ballot: Election Security Ahead of the 2026 Midterms

Separating Fact from Fear in Election Security
Season 15
• September 20, 2026

The Talk

You hear a lot about election security these days—but what’s fact, and what’s fear? Just ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, we’re going straight to the source.

Ben Spear, Chief Infrastructure & Security Officer, and Kathleen McGrath, Director of Public Information, of the New York State Board of Elections, will offer an inside look at how secure our elections really are and what New York State is doing to protect the democratic process. Drawing on years of hands-on experience defending election infrastructure and integrity at the state and national levels, Spear and McGrath will break down the threats, the safeguards, and the realities behind today’s headlines.

As concerns about election integrity continue to dominate public discourse, election officials face unprecedented pressure from cyber threats, misinformation, and public mistrust. In this talk, Ben Spear and Kathleen McGrath will explore how election systems are protected, what vulnerabilities are actively monitored, how collaboration between governments and cybersecurity organizations helps keep elections resilient, and how voters can arm themselves with facts about elections and voting in an age of mis- and disinformation.

Attendees will gain a clearer understanding of:

  •     The current threat landscape facing U.S. elections
  •     How New York State approaches election cybersecurity
  •     What has changed since recent election cycles—and what has not
  •     How election officials combat mis- and disinformation about elections and voting

This conversation will offer a rare, behind-the-scenes perspective on election security from individuals directly responsible for safeguarding it.
