Winship has written for crooner and actor Frank Sinatra, Bill and Hillary Clinton, actress Julie Andrews, violinist Itzhak Perlman, and historian David McCullough, among many others. The topics he has covered range from Native American history to theories on the origin of the universe to the Korean War.
Winship was nominated for the Writers Guild Award for Excellence in Writing nine times, receiving it in 2004 and 2009 for commentaries written with Bill Moyers. He is co-editor of the book Bill Moyers Journal: The Conversation Continues (Public Affairs Television, Inc., 2011).
As union president of the Writers Guild of America, he was a key player in the tumultuous and public 100-day strike from November 2007 to February 2008 that sent TV shows into repeats and halted movie production.
Winner of a 2009 Emmy for writing, Winship has worked for The Discovery and Learning channels, major PBS stations, CBS and National Geographic, among others.
